Dave Gonzales (Illustration 1980) formulated his now-internationally successful Homies toy line while he was still a young student at CCA. More than 300 figures have been produced from his designs and are now packaged and sold in collector sets. The exhibition includes toys, drawings, comic books, packaging and paintings.
The first Homies were based on barrio personalities from Gonzales' comic strip in Low Rider magazine. They were originally sold in vending machines. Homies were pulled off the market and condemned as promoting negative stereotypes and gang life. This controversy had the effect of publicizing he property, giving it instant street-cred. Today Gonzales engages in many different creative pursuits, working with narrative in the medium of animation and pursuing his life's dream of painting.
Presented by the CCA Alumni Council Archive and Exhibition Groups.
On view in Meyer Library through Dec. 9, 2010. Opening reception Sept. 22, 5-7pm.
