Requesting Digital Images
The CCA library provides digitization services as part of its Visual Resources Collections development and updating effort. Faculty may request to have slides, books, magazines, or other resources, both personal and/or belonging to CCA, digitized and added to the CCA Visual Resources Collection. The library will not digitize images solely for individual use.
Faculty with slides they wish to convert to digital format, but which are beyond the scope of the library's collections may refer to this list of local businesses which digitize slides at a reasonable cost.
Images are made available to faculty through Image Groups, a feature of ARTstor, our online image management service. Training and assistance with ARTstor are also available upon request. You may also request to have images transferred to your personal storage device (e.g. flash drive, hard drive, or CD). The CCA library does not provide CD’s for storage.
All image requests are accepted on the basis of their value to the collection. Images that are already available on ARTstor will not be digitized unless it can be determined that the quality of the image already available is inferior. Black & white slides, photographs, or other reproductions of two-dimensional color works will not be digitized. Where possible we attempt to digitize from the highest quality sources to eliminate duplication of efforts.
The library prioritizes images which:
- Exemplify a style, medium or genre not adequately represented in ARTstor.
- Will be repeatedly used in ongoing CCA curriculum by more than one faculty member or course.
- Original photography in subject areas useful as teaching resources.
Status of the Slide Collections
The slide collections are no longer being actively maintained. Faculty may use the Oakland slide collection as a self-service facility, and may request digitization of any slide from the collection that hasn’t already been digitized. Digitized slides in Oakland slide collection are indicated by a bright green marking on the top edge of the slide.
Development of CCA Image Assets
The library continues to build its collection of images that are copyright-free or where the college is the rights holder. These include:
- Student slides and digital images, primarily selected from student award competitions.
- Work photographed by faculty or others that has been donated to the library.
- Photographs and other graphic documents from the College Archive.
- Images that document the creative output of the college, which also fall within the purview CCA's Institutional Repository.
