The Object Collections in Simpson Library provide access to physical objects that support and enrich the Design curriculum. Objects chosen for the collections fit into several broad categories:

  • Iconic examples of design (historic and contemporary)
  • Analog tools which demonstrate the functionality and design of the pre-digital age
  • Objects which fill a specific pedagogical need
  • Series of objects which show the progression of object design through history

Analog Tools

Analog Tools

The analog tool collection includes objects which demonstrate the functionality and design of the pre-digital age. Handling these objects gives students an opportunity to study various design qualities: weight, materiality, functionality, ergonomics, etc.

See Mara Holt Skov's Dematerialization assignment for one example of how this collection may be used the classroom (sign in required).

Blobjects

Blobjects is a term coined by former CCA professor Steven Skov Holt to describe the curvaceous, fluid and friendly objects that were both biologically-inspired and computer generated by designers from across the globe in the early years of the 21st century.

This collection includes objects included in the 2005 book and exhibition Blobjects & Beyond: the new fluidity in design by Steven Skov Holt and Mara Holt Skov.

See Mara Holt Skov's Blobject assignment for one example of how this collection may be used the classroom (sign in required).

Machine Art

Machine Art Collection

CCA’s collection of Machine Art objects was inspired by the 1934 MOMA exhibition catalog Machine Art highlighting the beauty and precision of machine-made objects.

The perfect geometries and polished surfaces of springs, chains, propellers and laboratory glassware were presented as sculptural forms. This exhibition helped visitors to see the beauty, and even artistry in these objects.

Interface History Collection

The Interface History Collection is built to provide students the experience of ergonomics and design of older operating systems and interfaces.
