Faculty Privileges

Circulation desk in Simpson Library

Library Card

Faculty are eligible for library borrowing privileges as soon as their employment contract is finalized. Your CCA ID card is your library card. Please bring your card to the circulation desk on either campus and we will register your library account. If you do not have a CCA ID, present your employment contract or a letter signed by your department head that indicates the period of your appointment, along with a photo ID, to either circulation desk.

Borrowing privileges end on the last day of the month of your final semester teaching, with the exception of retiring tenured and emeritus faculty. Upon retirement, tenured and emeritus faculty continue to have full library privileges.

Loan Periods

Faculty may check out most books for four weeks, current periodicals and films may be checked out for one week. Items may be renewed online, except when an item is recalled for use by another patron. Up to thirty items may be checked out at any one time.

Instructions for placing and picking up holds may be found here.

Overdue Fines

Fines are not assessed for faculty, however lost or damaged books will be charged a replacement fee. These fees must be paid by the end of the academic term in which the fee is initiated. Failure to do so will result in suspension of library access privileges until all fees are paid in full. Faculty who leave the college and still owe library fees remain responsible for those costs until they are paid in full.

Inter-library loan materials may accrue fees if significantly overdue, damaged, or lost.

Recommend a Purchase

Materials required for your course may be recommended for purchase by the libraries by using the Suggest a Purchase tool when you are logged into the library catalog. Ebooks are purchased whenever possible in order to support online courses. Purchase suggestions are limited to 10 per patron per semester. A CCA Libraries account is required to fill out the form - if you are unable to login to your library account, please contact us.

Scanning and Digitizing

Several scanners are available in Simpson library for faculty use. When scanning library materials, please respect the limits of copyright restrictions. Consider putting books on reserve for your course as an alternative, if you require an entire text.

If you are looking for streaming access to VHS tapes or DVD's in the libraries' collection, see the section "access to films" below.

Course Reserves

Faculty may request to place library materials on Course Reserve; these items will be held at the circulation desk for students to check out. Faculty may choose a loan period of 2 hours (in-library use only) or 2 days for Course Reserves. We encourage faculty to provide readings for their courses online through their Moodle courses in addition to any physical items placed on Reserve.

Using Non-Circulating Materials

Library use only items may be checked out by faculty for use during class sessions. Scanners are also available in the library to scan portions of library-use-only items if needed.

Access to Films

Simpson library has a viewing station for viewing VHS tapes and DVD's from the library collection. We also have external disc drives available for short term checkout for viewing DVD's.

CCA libraries are able to provide digital access to films in our collections in certain circumstances.

We must follow copyright law, using a fair educational use exemption. One step in determining fair use is to use legal streaming copies whenever they are available. The libraries’ have allocated budget funds toward purchasing streaming video whenever possible. Kanopy, Docuseek, and California Newsreel are some of the providers we use.

In some cases, the streaming video is available only to individuals, for example, Amazon streaming rentals and Netflix streaming accounts. If a film is available through these services, we ask that students be required to purchase viewing access to the film.

Netflix has made some of their titles available for educational use, information about this is available here.

If we are able to create a digital copy of a DVD or VHS tape in the libraries’ collection, this will be provided in Panopto, CCA’s new video platform. From here you may share a link with your students in your Moodle course. Access to the file will be limited to the semester it is needed. We ask that you add the following copyright statement to your Moodle course if you are sharing digital files provided by the library.

"Material shared on CCA course sites may be protected by copyright law (Title 17 U.S. Code), and is shared using fair educational use considerations. It is restricted from further distribution, retention or copying."

CCA Extension privileges

CCA Extension faculty who do not have a CCA ID card may check out up to 15 items; books circulate for 2 weeks, with one renewal. Privileges are granted through the last day of the month in which the instructor's class ends.

Using UC Berkeley Libraries

Full-time faculty members may obtain a UC Berkeley library card entitling them to limited borrowing privileges by presenting a letter on school letterhead confirming their full-time employment. HR can provide this letter. See UC Berkeley's policy for more information.
