Art+Feminism is a rhizomatic campaign begun in 2014 to improve coverage of women and the arts on Wikipedia, and to encourage female editorship.

Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of the disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of female participation. This represents an alarming absence in an important repository of shared knowledge.

We invite people of all gender identities and expressions, particularly transgender, cisgender, and gender-nonconforming women, to address this absence by organizing in person at our communal updating event of Wikipedia’s entries on art and feminism.

Impact of these events

Since 2014, there have been over 280 Art + Feminism events across six continents - creating and improving thousands of Wikipedia pages for artists like Tina Charlie, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Ana Mendieta, Augusta Savage, and Frances Stark.

At CCA

Editors from Wikimedia and CCA librarians will provide training and reference sources to assist contributors in adding and improving the Wikipedia entries for women artists -- and particularly CCA faculty, alumni, and other California artists.

CCA libraries’ collections will be available as research sources.
